This exhibition, La Mer et les rêves/ Havet och Drömmarna/ The Sea and the Dreams, is an exhibition inspired by the visual poetry of the Mediterranean Sea. At the first glimpse, the infinite space of the sea connects with the infinite space within, creating a moment of inspiration, awe, and stunned silence. Despite who we are, where we come from, and the life situations we experience, the view of the sea remains a source of inspiration and daydream. When the open sea appears in front of us, we are attracted; it effectively mirrors the immense open space within and we feel as if we know the sea and that it knows us.
The materials used for the works are very light and strong spinnaker sailcloth, string, and grommets, as well as wood. Historically and culturally, these materials have a utilitarian relationship to the sea. The impervious sailcloth is painted by immersion (stained) resulting in abstract atmospheric dreamscapes that are stretched, shaped, folded and held in place by gravity. The resulting works feature abstract and vaguely figurative dreamscapes of the sea and its underworld.
